A lot of our time here at orientation is spent in classes, watching performances, learning Korean (and failing), etc. But when we do have time to go out, where do we go? A bar? A restaurant?
No.
Family Mart. Or “Club FM” as some of us have started calling it.
Who would think that drinking and talking outside of a convenience store would be fun? Apparently, everyone in orientation, because night after night you can find all of us there, sitting on crates, the ground, literally anything we can find. We’re putting Jay and Silent Bob to shame.

Sorry that there haven’t been more updates, the internet was down in the men’s dormitory for the past few days.
A few things I learned the second night here:
- South Africans are awesome
- Soju doesn’t give me hangovers. While this sounds good, it’s actually very VERY bad.
- I don’t understand what my Scottish roommate is saying 60% of the time.
- You have to order food when you go out to drink.
- Korean people love English, but are afraid to use it. I suppose they’re intimidated by us Westerners.
- It costs absolutely nothing to go out and drink here. For comparison – a bottle of beer at a bar back in NY averages $5-8. In Korea, a bottle of beer or soju is $1-2. Huh?
Scott the Brit/South African and Alan’s first shots of soju. Disgusting? We’ll see.
Grace (r.) also didn’t like soju.

Made it to South Korea. I don’t have a lot of time to write, so I’ll these pictures will have to suffice for now. Some people I met, random wanderings, and afternoon soju breaks. I’ll put some more words here when they don’t have us running up hills or learning basic Korean. Enjoy!
